1.1 Location and Geography

With the elevation of 1615 metres from the sea level, Champawat is located in the Kumaun region and southeast of Uttarakhand. It is surrounded by Kurm Parvat(Kranteshwar Temple) on South-East, Hingla Devi Temple on South-west and Maneshwar Temple on the north. Champawat is blessed with beautiful landscape which makes it a better place for locals as well as tourists. It is also surrounded by beautiful hill stations like Nainital , Almora and Pithoragarh.

Champawat is located at a distance of nearly 420 Km from national capital Delhi and 460 Km from state capital Dehradun . Champawat is easily accessible by roads which are in very good condition almost throughout the year and one can visit Champawat throughout the year as the weather phenomenon is not extreme in this region.

Champawat is easily accessible from any parts of India. There are several buses of Uttarakhand Transport Corporation, operating directly from Anand Vihar ISBT of Delhi to Champawat and Pithoragarh through National Expressway-3 and National Highway-9. Train services are also there from Anand Vihar Terminal, Delhi to Tanakpur. After Tanakpur there is abundance of private taxies which can help one reach Champawat. Another nearby railway station to Champawat is Haldwani which has good railway connectivity. There are several private taxies operating from Delhi which offer affordable sharing options to reach Champawat.

1. Baleshwar Group of Temples: Immerse yourself in the rich historical and spiritual heritage of Champawat by visiting the Baleshwar Temple. This temple is in the midst of Champawat and located merely at a distance of 300 metres from Roadways Bus Station Champawat. Dating back to the 10th century, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ratneshwar Dev and Devi Champawati Durga. Built in the ‘Nagar’ style of architecture, Baleshwar temple showcases intricate stone carvings that narrate Pauranik tales of revered Hindu Gods(Devi-Devatas). The Devi Champawati Durga is the reason why Champawat has received its name. The serene ambiance and spiritual vibes make it a significant pilgrimage site for devotees.

2. Kranteshwar Mahadev Temple: Another gem in Champawat’s religious landscape, the Kranteshwar Mahadev Temple located in the Kurm Parwat, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple provides not only a spiritual retreat but also an excellent vantage point to appreciate the natural beauty that envelopes Champawat. There is a history behind this temple and the Kurm Parwat wherein it is located.

“Lord Vishnu who appeared to the mankind as Kurma in his second incarnation(avatar) is said to have incarnated in this very  place “The Kurma Parwat” and stayed here for many year. The footprints of Lord Vishnu are still found here in the peak of this Parwat. The Kurma Parwat is the reason why the word ‘Kumaun’ originated and used for this region of Uttarakhand. Many hisotrians alongwith ‘Kedar Khand’ and ‘Manas Khand’ of ‘Skand Puran’ confirms the fact that the word ‘Kumaun’ orginated from this very mountain.”

3. Nagnath Temple: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Nagnath Temple is an ancient shrine known for its historical and architectural significance. Although it is a very old temple, but modern temple here was built by ‘Guru Gorakhnath’ a well-known sage of Kumaun region. One can easily reach Nagnath temple by trekking for 500 metres through ‘Malli Bazar’ from station market champawat.

4. Golu Devata Temple(Mandir): The Golu Mandir or Goljyu Mandir is the most revered temple in the Kumaun region of Uttarakhand and many devotees throughout the year visit here and take the blessings.

According to history, Golu or Goljyu was a prince of Katyuri King. Once this Katyuri king went to a Jungle on a hunting expedition and he saw a beautiful woman there. He fell in love with the woman and married her. The other queens of the king were jealous of her. When she was expecting a child, other queens conspired to kill her child at birth but they failed. They made many other failed attempts but finally they drowned him in a river. However, for surprise, the child came out unharmed and was adopted by a fisherman. After hew grew young and returned to the kingdom, he revealed the conspiracy of his step mothers. The other queens were convicted by the king and ‘Golu’ was crowned as heir by the king. Golu was very kind and just and his kingdom was very happy under him. That’s why people worship Golu as “Nyay ke Devata” till date.

People from all over Kumaun and Uttarkhand visit here for justice and kind Goljyu Dev delivers justice even today and hence is the most revered God of Kumaun region. Golu Devata Temple is located at merely 800 metres walkable distance from Station Bazar Champawat.

5. Ghatotkach Temple(Ghatku Mandir):  Surrounded by beautiful Deodar trees, Ghatotkach Temple is located 2 Kms away from Champawat city on Champawat-Tamli road. This temple is of utmost religious significance in this region. It is the among the very few temples dedicated to Gatotkach, son of great Bhima. Ghatotkach had a great impact in the battle of Mahabharat and it is said when Karna killed Ghatotkach with ‘Amogh Shakti Astra’, his head fell in the very place where modern temple is located. Many devotees visit here throughout the year.

6. Maneshwar Temple and Maneshwar Park:  Maneshwar temple is another beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and at a distance of  just 8 Kms from Champawat City and 7 Kms from Lohaghat. Built by king Nirbhay Chand of Chand Dynasty, it is one of the oldest temples of Champawat region. It is also worshipped as Shaktipeeth as it is believed that the ashes of Devi Sati fell here in this place. There is a sacred ‘naula’ near this temple and often bathing here is considered auspicious. There is a beautiful eco park just few hundred metres away from this temple and beside the NH-09. The eco park is a view point for both Champawat and Lohaghat cities and offers beautiful view of sunrise and sunset.

7. Tea Garden (Chai Bagan):    The Botanical tea garden is a modern centre of attraction for tourists in Champawat. Located just 6 Kms away from the city, this tea garden is one of the largest tea gardens in Himalayan region as it is spread over 235 Hectare area. This tea garden is looked after by Uttarakhand Tea Development Board and organic tea produced here is sold by the brand name “Uttarakhand Tea”. This tea garden provides employment to more than 4oo workers from neighbourhood making it even more significant in the region.

Recently it has become a prominent centre of tourist attraction as people from all over the state visit here. The UTDB is constructing home stays around this tea garden to attract more and more tourists. Lush green tea plants and view of Champawat city from this place makes your day, thus making is the must visit place for nature lovers.

8. Purnagiri Temple: Embark on a spiritual journey with a trek to the Purnagiri Temple, perched atop a hill and one of the revered Shaktipeeths. Purnagiri Temple is approximately 21 Kms away from Tanakpur and 95 Kms from Champawat city. Lakhs of devotees visit here from the places all over India and throughout the year, making it the most revered Devi Temple in Kumaun region alongwith Garjia Temple.

9.  Koli Dhek Lake(Koli Dhek Jheel):   Just 3 Kms away from Lohaghat, Koli Dhek Jheel is located beside the Lohaghat-Devidhura-Haldwani motor route and most visited tourist place in the Champawat and Lohaghat region. Surrounded by alpine deodar trees, it is no less beautiful than any of the prominent lakes like Naini Lake. This lake has lot more to offer like boating and other water activities and a beautiful landscape around this lake adds to the beauty of nearby cities like Lohaghat.
